Work and workplaces have gone through enormous transformations between the Mid-19th and late 20th centuries. Experience these changes through a first time partnership between the National Churchill Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, the Missouri Humanities Council, and Callaway County. We are one of only six sites in Missouri who will host this exhibition. The full exhibition will be complimented by an exhibition that focuses on Callaway County.

It’s not very often you get to say that we will host “Cuba’s pre-eminent pianist and one of that country’s most important musicians of the past four decades,” but that’s just what’s going to happen as we present Chucho Valdés and his current working band The Afro-Cuban Messengers. To say this is one of the 2011/2012 season’s highlights is an understatement. Description: Born in the Slovak Republic, Maria Duhova Trevor holds a Masters degree in harp performance from the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava. Maria has been a principal harpist, featured recitalist, and recording artist on the world stage. Since 2001, Maria has performed in the Missouri Symphony Orchestra’s two month-long “Hot Summer Nights.” She also collaborates with local musicians and appears regularly with Columbia Civic Orchestra, University Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Mr. Michael Lasser will speak songs of the Great Depression, particularly on unemployment portrayals of working women, during the decade when popular songs were more interested in work than at any other time. Songs, as always, were about love; yet, at the same time, they reflected the attitudes, values, and behavior of their time. They expressed social concerns within the context of love ballads. In “If I Ever Got a Job Again,” an unemployed man is eager to find work so he and his beloved can marry.

Description:

Every so often we feel the need to see some old friends, people who have periodically in a variety of contexts lit up “We Always Swing” Jazz Series stages. Pianist Benny Green fits that bill. A Berkeley, Calif., native, of late he has come to return home after more than two decades in New York. Initially a classical near-prodigy, thanks to his father, a tenor saxophonist, he turned to jazz, first imitating recordings that featured the likes of Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker. As a teenager and after high school he worked around the Bay Area before moving to the East Coast. He met veteran pianist Walter Bishop Jr. and had a stint with Bobby Watson; then he worked with vocalist Betty Carter before joining Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. By 1990 he was recording and performing as a leader.

Count among Green’s previous Jazz Series appearances a solo concert, one as a member of Brown’s trio and another with Watson. His most recent appearance here was a cooperative effort in tribute to the late Brown with Christian McBride and Gregory Hutchinson. For their part Peter and Kenny Washington appeared with pianist Bill Charlap; Peter Washington also appeared New Year’s Eve with Watson and as a member of the Blue Note 7.
